Wilma Nancy Reed Merritt

Died: Sunday, April 22, 2012
Age: 79
Wilma Merritt, a friend to many in the community, especially seniors, died April 22 at her home of more than 50 years in Ortonville.

Wilma was born April 17, 1933 to William and Margaret Price. She was the second youngest of 10 children.

Wilma began her work in Brandon Township as an emergency dispatcher, recalled her longtime friend Karen McArthur. She then became the first coordinator of the Brandon Senior Center (now the Edna Burton Senior Center), where she worked tirelessly for seniors for more than 30 years, going beyond the call of duty and making friends and memories that she cherished throughout her life. McArthur remembered how Wilma would style hair for the ladies at the senior center, putting it up in rollers. The seniors did a lot of crafts and Wilma would host a craft and bake sale every month to ensure the senior center had funds to continue to function.

“She was a very fun person,” said McArthur. “She told practical jokes, had a really good sense of humor and all the seniors always loved her. She knew how to take care of them. She did stuff with them, went to the hospital and picked them up, they were like family to her. If she was your friend, she was your friend forever.”

She is remembered by her friends and family as a strong and independent woman, never too busy to lend a helping hand or tell a witty joke with her humble sense of humor. Halloween was one of her favorite holidays and she was known to dress humorously and pass out the best candy in Ortonville while her family would play and dance to music in her yard. Christmas never went by without a house full of family, laughter and food. McArthur remembered Wilma always gave gifts of homemade Kahlua during the Christmas season.

Wilma enjoyed her flowers and could be seen on summer nights working on her flower garden or enjoying the sight from her backyard patio. She enjoyed taking vacations to her cabin in Newberry, Mich. with her friends and family in hopes of seeing another moose. She always kept her video camera ready just in case one would venture into sight.

Although her family will miss her dearly, they said they know she’ll still be in their hearts, telling them to “behave.” They take comfort in knowing that she is joining those who preceded her in death— her son, Steve; husband, James “Cowboy” Merritt; and father of her children, Jr. Reed.

Wilma is survived by four children, Judy LaPoint, Mike (Barb) Reed, Pat (Mike Potvin) Reed, and Janet (Cliff) Huhta; along with ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her youngest sister, Patricia Kelley; and many nieces and nephews.

Wilma did not wish to have a funeral service, but there will be a celebration of her life from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, April 29 at the Edna Burton Senior Center, 345 Ball St., Ortonville.

She retired from the job she loved: teaching fourth and fifth grades at Troy Union Elementary School in Troy, Michigan. Upon her retirement in June of 2009, she and her husband of nearly 29 years, James Mitchell, moved from Rochester Hills to their vacation home near Traverse City.

Mary Ann was a lifelong ballet dancer, loved playing piano and renaissance recorder, enjoyed vacationing in the tropics where she often explored underwater reefs and many a jewelry store! During retirement, she very much enjoyed playing golf with the Wednesday morning ladies league at Crystal Mountain, going to classic movies at the State Theater, socializing with neighbors and going to favorite restaurants.
