Harold Leroy Coffee

Died: Tuesday, April 23, 2013
Age: 90
of Goodrich died at Genesys Hospice in Goodrich.

Harold was respected and deeply loved by his family. He served as a flight instructor in the Marine Corps in World War II. He went on to graduate from Michigan State University and retired after a long career at General Motors. Harold was dedicated to helping his community and served on the Goodrich School Board and the Wheelock Memorial Hospital Board. Harold volunteered at the Center for Visually Impaired and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Goodrich Public Library. He shared his love, compassion and thirst for life with his family and friends.

“Dad was on the Goodrich School Board for about eight years,” said Susan Howes, daughter of Harold. “He was very progressive and active when it became time to build the Goodrich High School on farm land at Hegel and Gale roads in the early 1960s. Moving the school, which at the time was the high school and middle school, that far outside of the Village of Goodrich was pretty bold then and received some opposition.”

“Dad was also active in spearheading the fund drive to help move the Wheelock Memorial Hospital out to M-15 when the old building closed. Today that facility is the Genesys Hospice Care Center. Dad was an avid reader and was always such a good friend of the local librarians. He always encouraged and promoted education—at home and in public.”

Surviving are two daughters, Linda and husband Bill Gratsch of Florida, Susan and husband Thom Howes of Grand Blanc; seven grandchildren, Amy and husband Jim Gooch, Bill and wife Robin Gratsch, Brian and wife Annette Coffee, Jonathan and wife Samran Coffee, Molly, Maria and Thomas Howes; ten great-grandchildren, Kaley and Olivia Gooch, Ben and Caroline Gratsch, Bodhi and Kai Coffee, Marley, Augustus, Shiloh and Hunter Coffee. The family would like to thank special friends, Rhona Coffee-McBride, Tina Gerding and Dee Moreno.

Harold was preceded in death by his son, John, in 2005 and his wife, Audrey, in 2011. At Harold’s request, his body has been donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. There was no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity, 101 Burton Street, Flint, MI 48503, or to the Genesys Hospice Care Center, 7280 S. State, Goodrich, MI 48439.
