Carpenter Elementary School first grader Drew and second grader Izabel take center stage as they tightrope walk more than a foot off the ground. The two participated Cirque Amoncus’s circus event that came to the elementary on Nov. 3. The students studied the history of circuses, different circus companies and attended a hands-on circus experience for classmates, teachers and parents. Photo by G. November 09, 2011 - Carpenter Elementary School students studied "The Greatest Show on Earth" during their fall intersession, Oct. 31 to Nov. 4.

Circuses originally traveled from town-to-town in the form of a parade. Carpenter kids were taken to The Parade Company, where they were able to see colorful recreations of traveling circus cages as well as beautiful floats that will be used in Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

On Nov. 6 the children were treated to a hands-on, full day circus courtesy of Cirque Amongus. They rolled up their sleeves and learned genuine circus acts such as acrobatics, manipulative juggling, stilt walking and trapeze work, just to name a few! After a much needed break, the children were then able to practice their favorite act, get put into full costume and perform their very own "Carpenter Big Top Circus."

By Nov. 7 the main hallway at Carpenter Elementary was transformed into a dazzling array of one of a kind circus artwork, including life-sized trapeze artists swinging in the air and being shot out of a cannon.
