Artistic endeavor: Brandon students tops in art competition

February 15, 2012 - Brandon students received nine awards in the 2012 Southeast Michigan Regional Scholastic Art competition, including two gold keys, the highest recognition possible in the contest.

Brandon Middle School eighth grade student Courtney Hutchison received a gold key in printmaking for her piece entitled "Boy," the first time a BMS student has received the top award. Other middle school students honored were Jessica Krycia, an eighth grader who received a silver key for her drawing "404 Brain Not Found"; Lily Stolz, seventh grade, received a certificate for her mixed media piece "Friends Against the World"; Trey Kerr, seventh grade, received a silver key in mixed media for "Different Directions"; and Melinda Cheng, eighth grade, received a silver key for her sculpture, "Go Away!" BMS winning students are taught by Jody Daniels.

Brandon High School Senior Brittany Fischer received a gold key for her painting "Les Fleurs des Fees." Other winning BHS students were senior Kristine Jones, who received a silver key for her drawing "Fruit Basket," as well as a certificate for her drawing "Out West" and junior Teagan Mathieson, who received a silver key for the comic art "MK Round 2 PGs 1,2."

Winning artwork is on display at the College for Creative Studies Walter B. Ford Building in Detroit from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until March 2. Gold key winners Hutchison and Fischer will have their work go on to national competition.
