8th grader excells in science

March 21, 2012 - Emily Cormier, Orion Township resident, who attends Oakview Middle School, in grade 8 won 3rd place and a $300 Amazon gift card at the Flint (Kettering Univ) regional Science Fair for her experiment, "Green Roofs: Cool is in and Heat is Out."

She tested conventional shingles, Astroturf donated by a company down south and green grass (sod she grew in the basement), on an upside down glass fish tank that acted as a "house" and measured temperatures under the surface she was testing and inside the tank for 30 minutes using two big 75W lightbulbs hanging over the tank as a heat source.

"She hopes to be a geo-physicist and biochemist some day and is a sponge for science," her mother, Madeleine Miehls said.

Emily was also recognized with the following: Opportunity to apply for "opportunity" to compete in Broadcom Masters competition in Wash DC.; Michigan Association of Hazardous Materials Outstanding Achievement award for 2012; American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, And Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc 2nd Place Award - Certificate of Achievement; Certificate of Achievement from Flint Science Fair.
