May 09, 2012 - Battle of the bands

From 5:30-9 p.m., May 18, at the Brandon Township Public Library, 304 South St., Ortonville, the Battle of the Bands will be held. There will be vendors selling food, and the event is appropriate for all ages. In the event of bad weather, the battle will be moved indoors to the community room. There is no cost. Recycle day

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 19, at the Edna Burton Senior Center, 345 Ball St., Ortonville, a recycle day for electronics and metals will be held in the west side of the parking lot. Acceptable items include computers, copper, power tools, electronic appliances, and more. Nothing with refrigerants will be accepted. Details: Janet, 248-701-1654.

Gifted Hands Art Show

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 19, at the Goodrich United Methodist Church, 8071 S. State Road, the Gifted Hands Art Show will be held. Eleven artists will be displaying and selling their work including woodcarvings, paintings, pottery, quilts, and more. Details:

CreekFest volunteers

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 2 the CreekFest committee for the Ortonville DDA will need friendly, mature teen volunteers ages 15 to 18 to assist with the many adult and children's activities in downtown Ortonville. Details:Molly LaLone at

Cereal drop-off

From 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and Sundays the Ortonville United Methodist Church (OUMC), 93 Church St., is collecting cereal to be distributed to families in need in the village for summer breakfasts. Many youth qualify for free or reduced costs for breakfast and lunches during the school year. For more details about Village Kids Breakfast Club - contact Betty Stewart 248-627-3324.

Barns golf outing

The David Barns Golf Outing and Fundraiser begins at noon, May 19, at the Golden Hawk Golf Club, 9861 Meisner Road, Casco. David Barns is the son of Goodrich High School varsity basketball coach Gary Barns. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes 18 holes with power cart, free driving range, door prizes, and more. Clemetsen retires

From 4:30-6 p.m., May 17, Harvey-Swanson Elementary, 209 Varsity Dr., Ortonville will host a Community Open House in honor of Dr. Helen Clemetsen, school principal who is retiring after 38 years of service. Details: 248-627-1850.

Ice Cream Social

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., May 17, at the Brandon High School, 1025 S. Ortonville Road, behind the school by the stadium, the annual Ice Cream Social will be held to benefit the Brandon music department. Donations are encouraged. Details: Janice Serbinoff, 248-202-7507.
