May 16, 2012 - A man who assisted police in capturing a criminal in Bald Eagle Lake and two deputies and a detective from the Brandon Township substation were recently honored by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

During the annual OCSO Awards Ceremony this week, Brandon Detective Dale Brown and Deputy Randy Tarp, Deputy Keith Christie and Det./Sgt. Jason Parks of the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office were all recognized for professional excellence for their work in solving multiple home invasions that occurred in Oakland, Lapeer and Genesee counties.

Dannie Vore, a former Groveland Township resident, is currently serving 7 to 30 years in prison and Jessica Herbst, formerly of Brandon Township, is serving 3 to 15 years in prison after being convicted of multiple home invasions last year after a tip was called in to police following the publication of a story on the home invasions in The Citizen.

OCSO Sgt. and Brandon Substation Commander Pete Burkett said Vore and Herbst were arrested within 48 hours of the original tip and subsequently, they confessed to 26 home invasions and were linked to twice that many.

"I'm very proud of all the hard work that all our deputies at the substation do," said Burkett. "They are very conscientous and hardworking and it's nice to see them recognized."

Burkett is also appreciative of Shelby Township resident Jim Lumetta, who was given a citizen's award by the OCSO.

Last August, Lumetta offered his pontoon boat to deputies who were pursuing a Flint man who jumped into Bald Eagle Lake in an attempt to swim away from police. Lumetta, who owns a cottage on the lake, drove his boat to the suspect, who finally surrendered to police.

"We are very appreciative of whenever citizens can step up to the plate and help us in doing our duties," Burkett said.
