Groveland Twp.- For more than 60 years, campers have lingered in the solitude of a spacious township camp.

Named for Tamarack Hills Farms and purchased in 1950 by the United Jewish Charities—Camp Tamarack spans more than 1,400 acres of wilderness near Perryville Road and attracts more than 15,000 visitors each year.

"This year marks the 110th anniversary of the Fresh Air Society, created as a committee of the United Jewish Charities by Blanche Hart and Ida Koppel, who saw the need to provide recreational activities in the out-of-doors," said Mandy Stewart, assistant director, Tamarack Camps outdoor education.

At noon, Oct. 11, Camp Tamarack, 3599 Perryville Road, will celebrate the 110 years with a luncheon at the Butzel Conference Center. Tours of Camp Maas will be provided. RSVP by Oct. 5.

Since opening in the 1950s Camp Tamarack has expanded with DeRoy, Fishman, Sheruth, Berman, Levison, and Specialty Villages. Campers live in different villages according to age and gender.

Camp Tamarack includes two programs—outdoor eduction open to the public for community groups, for school age groups, families all designed for kindergarten through the corporate level. Then for 10 weeks between mid-June and mid-August the camp is closed for regular summer camp.

"A lot of people don't realize more than $1 million is available for youth to attend camp that can't afford it," said Stewart. "While our physical footprint has basically stayed the same over the last 60 years, our programs have continued to increase. Come see what we have to offer here. Come check out one of the largest challenge courses in the state in addition to multiple lakes on the property. Our success is due to providing a good positive experience in a physically and emotionally safe environment. Camp Tamarack provides a personal growth experience for a variety of individuals."
