November 14, 2012 - Where and when to get free meals

For folks who need a free meal and those who simply don't wish to dine alone, the North Oakland County affiliate of Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) is offering a fantastic service.

A number of Oxford and Orion churches participate on a rotating basis in what's called the Community Free Meals Program. All the meals are served between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, it's the Lake Orion United Methodist Church doing all the cooking.

Tuesday night's meals are served up by Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ in Oxford.

Oxford United Methodist Church hosts the very popular Wednesday meals, while Christ the King Church in Oxford handles Thursday night's dining experience.

"It's open to anybody," said Sandy Weaver, executive director of Love INC. "We invite everyone who's looking for a way to supplement their income by having a free meal. They can do it four evenings a week if they want. No questions asked. Some people come just because they're lonely and don't like to eat by themselves." Ė Editor C.J. Carnacchio

Fish needs help with T-Day drive

Oxford-Orion FISH is looking for volunteers to lend some sweat and muscle to its Thanksgiving food drive.

Folks are needed to help collect non-perishable food items from Oxford and Lake Orion schools and transport them to the FISH pantry, which is located at 487 First St. in Thomas, an unincorporated community located in northern Oxford Township.

This will be done on Friday, Nov. 16. Times will vary depending on which school a volunteer is assigned or how many they wish to collect from.

Volunteers are also needed to sort the donations at the pantry from about 1-4 p.m. Nov. 16.

Folks are needed from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 to help assemble Thanksgiving baskets for FISH clients.

For more information or to sign up, please contact FISH at (248) 628-3933.

Correction

In the Nov. 7 story "And the Award goes to..." We forgot to mention that Mike Harrison also recieved an award from the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department and Oxford Township presented an award to the Levy Co./American Aggregates. We apologize for these omissions.

Packing party for the troops

Oxford American Legion Auxiliary Unit 108 is hosting a packing party for the troops on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.

The Auxiliary is asking folks to please drop off their leftover or spare Halloween candy at Legion Post 108 (130 E. Drahner Rd.) so it can be placed in care packages for U.S. soldiers serving overseas.

The group is also requesting that people kindly donate their returnable bottles and cans to help cover the cost of postage for these packages. The bottles and cans can also be dropped off at Post 108. The last shipment of packages cost the Auxiliary $2,250 in postage.

Folks who have the address of a military serviceman or woman serving overseas in a war zone are asked to please share it with the Auxiliary so they can send packages to these brave souls and their comrades. Contact Auxiliary President Pat Bliss at (248) 628-3101.
