August 14, 2013 - It was party time at Deer Lake Beach on Friday, Aug. 9.

Beachgoers attending the bash got into the beach free and could also snack on free goodies like cotton candy and snow cones.

Free chips, hot dogs and nachos were provided courteously of the Clarkston Area Optimist Club from 12-1 p.m.

The Beach Bash included plenty of sunshine, fun in the sand and water and free games and prizes.

"This is our first year, but we are hoping it continues," said Deer Lake Beach Director Ryan Breen.

Mueva Fitness offered free Zumba classes throughout the party.

Joan Patterson, president of the Clarkston Optimists, said she is also hoping the event will become an annual one. She added this year, the club held the party to celebrate $25,000 in grants to fund programs and improvements at the beach.

Patterson said the group is also considering other projects at the beach like installing a boardwalk so visitors can more easily walk across the sand. –Andrea Beaudoin
