Trading spikes for suds, members of the Lake Orion High School Girls Volleyball teams served up car washes with a smile Sunday to raise money to offset team costs.

Hundreds of people stopped by to get their vehicles washed at the event, which was held at Golling Buick-GMC on Lapeer Road.

"The Lake Orion community really came out to support us on Sunday and our parents and players worked very hard to make the day a big success as well," said varsity Coach Ross Talbott.

Some who came were lured in by players standing with signs by the road—others heard about the fundraiser on social media and wanted to help out.

" I saw it on Facebook," said Lake Orion resident Kim Olds. "And I thought it would be a good way to get my car cleaned and benefit a good cause."

The donations raised will help support the team financially but there was another outcome to the event—it was a way for the players to get to know one another and for the teams to gel.

"It was fun to be together as a team, working for something off the court too," said junior varsity player Malina Moceri." And it was great to have all three teams—freshmen, junior varsity and varsity — working side by side."

"We laughed a lot and got to bond outside the gym," said freshman Alexa Grady. "And it was great to see so many people wanting to help us out."

Lake Orion, traditionally a top contender in volleyball, is poised to kick off the season with a bang. Early tournaments show the freshman and JV teams are strong competitors, and the varsity team is ready to take on any challenge.

"We are excited about the upcoming season," said Talbott. "Our five returning seniors are ready to set the pace and lead the way, and we have brought up four stellar sophomores who are eager to learn. Our bench is very deep and the attitude on the team is unanimous."
