Lake Orion's boys track team set two school records and and several runners garnered all-state accolades at the state championships held Saturday in Rockford.

The Dragons placed 12th in the 2014 State Track and Field Championships.

Kirk Hansen was a part of both new school records. He set the new standard in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.24 to take fourth place in the state.

Hansen also anchored the 1600 meter relay team that included Sheldon Drake, David Diaz and Zach Arnold. The four set the new school record in a time of 3:19:34 and won their heat in the finals. Their time was beaten in a later heat to give the Dragons third place.

The race included a personal best time for Diaz running the second leg of 100 meters. He gave the Dragons the lead entering the final two legs and Arnold and Hansen finished it off.

In the 800 meter relay, Drake, Matt Krause, Arnold, and Jacob Hatcher ran a season best of†1:29.02 to take fifth place.

According to Coach Stan Ford, the school-record time in the 1600 meter relay would have been good enough in most years to win a state title. The four ran in several other races on Saturday in what was the hottest day of the year for thus far for any Lake Orion meet.

The 1600 meter relay was the last race of the day.

"What impressed me was that despite the heat and running in other races, those guys came back and ran a race that set a school record and in most years would have been good enough to win a state championship," Ford said.
