Dragon Broadcasting wins Spartan after reevaluation

Lake Orion High School's broadcasting newscast, LO-AM, has been honored as one of the best broadcasting programs in the state of Michigan with a Spartan Award.

In April, LOHS' Television Production Workshop (home of LO-AM) and the Dragon Yearbook attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association's Spring Ceremony, where Spartan awards, honoring the staffs as a whole, and individual awards were handed out to exceptional student journalists.

While TPW received numerous individual awards, they were off by one point from the Spartan award, given to the best of the best student publications.

"We really are about producing the best newscast every day for our audience," advisor Roger Smith said.

After finding out about their loss, Smith and students of TPW decided to resubmit their news show to have another person critique their publication. Publications are judged by a single person, and for TPW, their judge felt that they lacked audio capabilities, which brought down their overall score. Other categories include writing, camera work, editing and general impression.

"I thought the evaluation was very fair and was on target aside from audio docking," Smith said. "I thought we had students this year that had really good work. I'm happy for them that they can achieve this state wide recognition that they were taking so long to attain."

The broadcasting program at LOHS started in the 1970s' and, according to Smith, has obtained a respectful history, where colleges such as Michigan State, Central Michigan and Western Michigan are aware of the high-quality product they put out to their students several times a week. Their notable history can be shown by the fact they have won a Spartan six times among the last seven years.

Past LO-AM broadcasts, along with current broadcasts throughout the school year, can be watched online at facebook.com/watchLOAM and on vimeo at vimeo.com/watchLOAM.
