January 18, 2012 - Dear Editor,

(In response to "Who needs a community library? We all do!, The Citizen, Jan. 14, page15.)

What is a library?

According to my 1977 edition of Webster's Dictionary, a library is a place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials are kept for use but not for sale.

Paula Gauthier is the Brandon Township Public Library Director and she says that a public library is a place that supports the growth of the community by designing and offering classes and programs for pre-schoolers to prepare them for a successful school experience. It is a place that sponsors programs to help develop a stable and growing business community and to support out of work adults. She says it is a place for leveling the playing field and nurturing the potential of (next). It's a place to get for free, things that must be paid for at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

It seems to be that the question must be asked; do we want the 1977 version of the library or do we want Paula's version? Only then can each of us decide if we can support the latest request for a millage increase.
