Letter to Editor: Vote yes on police millage

July 25, 2012 - Dear Fellow Orion Residents,

As a lifelong resident of Orion Township I am very concerned about the issues on

the Aug 7th primary ballot.

While most don't vote in the primary, it is imperative that the residents of Orion do. The 2 ballot questions for the police millage MUST receive a YES vote.

Without both the renewal & the additional millage Orion Township police will go back to 1992 staffing. This does not give the officers a raise, it simply maintains what staffing we currently have. The current dedicated millage of 1.9832 can only support 16 officers of the Oakland County Sheriff Office. We currently have 25 officers, so this means the lose of 9 officers. This will include road patrol, school liaison, and detectives.

Some interesting facts - only 6.7% of the Township's budget is spent on police protections and it all comes from the dedicated millage. It takes 4.5 deputies to keep 1 patrol vehicle on the road 24 hours a day. The additional 1.0168 millage will cost the average homeowner approximately 28 cents a day.

A no vote only hurts Orion residents. It equals higher crime, lower property values, less business growth, longer response time. I personally would rather spend 28 cent a day to keep my community safe, than lose 9 valuable officers that help keep Orion Township safe.

PLEASE VOTE "YES" ON "BOTH" POLICE MILLAGE PROPOSALS AND MAINTAIN OUR CURRENT STAFFING AND KEEP ORION TOWNSHIP SAFE.
