December 21, 2011 - Even though the record might not indicate it, the Oxford girls varsity hoops squad is getting better according to coach Steve Emert.

Last week, the Wildcats lost both games by a grand total of six points. On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Oxford fell to Rochester Adams 42-38 in overtime.

It appeared the Wildcats were going to get their second victory of the season, but Rochester Adam's Lauren Boyles hit a half court shot as time expired to tie the game at 32.

Rochester outscored the Wildcats 10-6 in the extra session.

"The girls played extremely hard," Emert said. "Adams has a good squad and were still developing and learning and getting that integrity and pride into our program."

Senior Michelle Gilmore led Oxford with 15 points, while junior Shelby Davis added 14.

The Wildcats welcomed Farmington into Ian Smith Gymnasium on Friday, Dec. 16. In a game that was tight throughout, Farmington was able to prevail 43-41.

The Wildcats were able to take a 31-17 lead into halftime, but Farmington used 13-2 third quarter advantage to pull within three, 33-30, entering the fourth quarter.

"We came out flat in the third quarter and I don't know why," Emert said.

Emert added Oxford missed 16 free-throws in the game. "In that type ball game, you need to make those free-throws," he said.

Davis led the Wildcats with 16 points and six rebounds.

"We can win these games...they just have to believe in themselves and each other," Emert said. "They are working their tails off and I am very proud of them. They are showing a lot of grit and staying in every ballgame."

"If we were getting totally destroyed, I would be concerned, but were not," Emert added. "These girls come into practice and work real hard and they are getting that points of pride back, and that is what we want."

With the losses, Oxford drops to 1-5 on the season. They took on Waterford Lady of the Lakes in Waterford on Monday, Dec. 19. Stay tuned next week for a complete recap.
