Skate into post season

February 20, 2013 - Icers will battle for the third place spot in the OAA playoffs this Saturday against North Farmington.

They won the first round of playoffs last Friday against Farmington, 3-2.

"It was a good win," said Clarkston Varsity Hockey Coach Bryan Krygier. "It was a well played game."

The boys opened the game with a goal from Jacob LaPorte in the first period with 3:41 to go, with an assist from Garrett Polish and Chase Wiedemann.

Polish struck in the second period to put the score 2-0 with an assist from LaPorte and Wiedemann. AJ Kowal kept the boys in the lead, opening the last period with his goal from Matt Denny, putting the score 3-0.

"AJ got a key goal for us," Krygier added.

Farmington scored two goals in the third period and goalie Jack Viazanko kept them from scoring more and saved 23 shots on the net for the night.

"He played well," said Krygier. "He kept us in the game."

The boys lost to Rochester United on Saturday, 5-1. Rochester moves on to play Stoney Creek for the first place position in the OAA Red.

Clarkston (12-10-2) plays North Farmington on Saturday at Detroit Skate Club for the third place spot, 5 p.m.

"We are going to work hard in practice this week not only to get ready for the game on Saturday but we come back on Tuesday and play our first playoff game," said Krygier.

The Wolves will head off against Lake Orion in the first round of MHSAA Pre-Regionals at DSC, 6 p.m.

The Dragons lost to Clarkston earlier in the season, 5-3, and Krygier expects it to be an emotional game.

"Whoever wins the game moves on and whoever loses is done for the season," he said. "It leaves a bad taste in your mouth to lose the game which no one wants to do. Their record doesn't really reflect the team they are. They are a much better team than their record."
