October 07, 2009 - Fred Kline, a Second Class Petty Officer in the US Coast Guard was recently promoted from Third Class Petty Officer on October 1, onboard the Coast Guard Cutter ALDER.

Petty Officer Kline is a native of Lake Orion and has served in the Coast Guard for seven years. He served as a damage control reservist for three years prior to entering active duty. Upon entering active duty, he discovered the damage control rate was at maximum capacity and was forced to choose a different Coast Guard occupation, becoming an operation specialist.

In 2007, the damage control rate became available and Petty Officer Kline switched back to his preferred duty of being a damage controlman. Later that year, he was assigned to the ALDER, where he is primarily responsible for maintaining emergency response equipment, including that related to firefighting and flooding control.

Petty Officer Kline received the Sailor of the Quarter Award for April, May, and June this year for recognition of his outstanding performance. The award is chosen by the crew.
