December 16, 2009 - Lake Orion's varsity boys basketball season opened with back-to-back games last week. After a difficult season last year and a new head coach, this season couldn't get here fast enough.

The Dragons opened at home against Bloomfield Hills Lahser. The Dragons smothered the Knights on defense, forcing multiple turnovers that led to some fast break scoring. The Dragons pressure defense and up tempo offense was more than the Knights could handle. Lake Orion won, 72-55. Alex Mayo, Brian Wandschneider and Derek Schraubn led the team in scoring, each scoring double digits.

Last Friday night the Dragons traveled to Auburn Hills, facing the Avondale Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets had a 17-5 record last year and feature two of the best perimeter players in Oakland County. The Dragons had their hands full with the speed and quickness of the Yellowjackets. At half, the Yellowjackets had a 15 point lead and came out strong to open the 2nd half. By the end of the 3rd period the lead had stretched to 24.

The Dragons never quit, forcing many turnovers, the Dragons took advantage and put up 32pts in 4th quarter alone. They ended up losing 68-59 in a hard fought battle. Alex Mayo & Derek Schraubn led the team in scoring.
