December 30, 2009 - Remember Dragon on the Lake, the gigantic celebration of Lake Orion's 150th and introduction of LO's own fire-breathing dragon? Remember the Snowflake Ball? It was a "roaring" good time at last year's 1920s-themed gala. Remember Music on the Porch? The Holiday Market? The Art Crawl and Mystery Tour?

Remember the Orion Art Center? No? Well you're not alone, though none of these events would have been possible without it.

"It's something that's overlooked," said LO resident and Orion Art Center (OAC) supporter Sandra Scolari. "It's a wonderful resource in our own back yard that we're not utilizing."

As grant funding and donations dry up, the not-for-profit OAC invites community members to a wine tasting to benefit the center. Winter Wine Tasting, hosted by Scolari and her husband, Ralph, will be Saturday, Jan. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Scolari says one of her 2010 resolutions is to get more involved with the OAC. Now that she's attended a few of the center's meetings, she says she'll do whatever she can to support it, including offering her home for the wine tasting.

"(Before) I didn't even know that it was there," she said. "There's a lot of wonderful things that come from (the OAC) to the community. Quite a few of the people I talk to are in the same boat. 'Orion Art Center? What are you talking about?'"

Tickets for the wine tasting are $35 and are available by calling 248-935-5141. The event will feature a collection of international wines, presented by Eric Adams of Wine cellars at Bommarito's Bakery, St. Clair Shores, as well as accompanying edibles.

Proceeds from the event could prove critical for the OAC since the center has "no money," according to Executive Director Reggie Harrison.

"We really need some help," she said.
