When caring becomes a burden

February 10, 2010 - Christ the Redeemer Community's "Understanding Mental Health Issues" Educational Series will present author, columnist and educator, Jacqueline Castine, who will facilitate an interactive workshop on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The program is designed for people who wish to be less stressed and more effective in their efforts to help loved ones with mental illness and addictions. Attendees will learn: 1) how to recognize when helping becomes enabling; 2) how to communicate with a person who have a mental illness; 3) secrets to setting boundaries; 4) how to reduce guilt, fear, resentment, and controlling behaviors; and 5) and how to increase positive empowerment strategies for everyone.

Castine, B.A., is a community education specialist at Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority. She is the author of "Recovery from Rescuing," and "I Wish I Could Fix it, But...".

She is in recovery from bipolar disorder, chemical dependency and co-dependency, and the mother of adult children with mental illness and addictions.

Books will be available for sale for $15 each at the presentation.

This program is co-sponsored by The Ministries of Healing of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Community, in partnership with the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority and the Oakland County Suicide Prevention Coalition.

The church campus is located at 2700 Waldon Road, (between Baldwin and Joslyn Roads, three miles north of I-75) in Lake Orion. The program is free to all residents in the Tri-county region. RSVP to 248-391-1621, ext. 35. Certificates of Attendance will be available.
