May 05, 2010 - The Varsity Softball team moved into first place in the Flint Metro League standings after going 4-0 with victories over league foes Fenton and Brandon.

In the first game of the doubleheader against Brandon on Monday, May 10, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, winning 9-5.

Senior Chelsea Kessler got the ball rolling when she stole home to score the first run of the game in the first inning, and junior Alyssa Hurtado hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to give Oxford all the run support they needed for the victory.

Senior Corrine Luxton had two RBI's in the game and freshman Autumn Cervantez went 2-4 with an RBI.

Oxford hitters struggled against Brandon pitching the second game, but managed to squeak out a 2-1 victory and complete the sweep.

In the top of the sixth inning, Oxford's offense managed to put two runs on the board with a two-run home run from sophomore Amanda Boyer.

Brandon would score a run in the bottom of the sixth and threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, but the Wildcats defense put the end to any comeback.

"I am so proud of the girls for coming into the game fully focused and ready to take charge in our collective destiny," said Head Coach Kristi McDevitt. "We didn't want to leave a league title up to chance; we knew we had to take these two games in order to put ourselves in a position for a league title and they didn't disappoint."

On Thursday, May 6, Oxford hosted Fenton and swept the Tigers, 5-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

Luxton pitched all 14 innings, striking out 16 and walking five while giving up 14 hits. Senior Kelly Cartner went 3-6 with two RBI's and sophomore Cassie Edgemon was 2-5 with three RBI's.

Oxford now sits at 8-2 in the FML and 11-7 overall. They host Lapeer East on Thursday, May 13 beginning at 4 p.m. before hosting the Jill Milosch Memorial Tournament on Saturday, May 15 starting at 9:30 a.m.
