May 26, 2010 - ...Buddy Poppy sales

Dear editor,

Three days of cold, windy and rainy weather didn't keep North Oakland VFW 334 from selling a record amount of Buddy Poppies May 6, 7 and 8, the days this annual fundraiser was held.

Lots of warm hearted, generous people opened their purses or wallets to contribute a total of $14,341.49 to buy their Buddy Poppy.

Top seller was Jim Hubbard who sold $1,903.00 worth of poppies during the three day event.

Last year the Post raised $9,622.85 selling poppies and the goal for 2010 was to beat that record. The three top Buddy Poppy sellers each received a $15.00 gift certificate awarded by Carl Slomczenski, owner of CJ's Restaurant.

The money raised will be used to assist needy or disabled veterans in North Oakland County, the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids where many widows and orphans of men and women who lost their lives in the service of our country now live as well as other local community activities.

The Post also supports the Guardian Angel project which sends packages to service men and women from this area currently in Iraq or Afghanistan.

James Trumble, Senior Vice Commander of VFW Post 334, chaired the Post's 2010 fund raising effort.

The VFW has been selling Buddy Poppies since May, 1922 and disabled veterans assemble the poppies.

From its inception the Buddy Poppy program has helped the VFW to live up to its motto, "To honor the dead by helping the living."

North Oakland VFW Post 334 meets the second Thursday of every month at the K of C Hall at 1400 Orion Road in Lake Orion at 7:30 PM.

Veterans interested in joining this Post can call Ernie Baker at 248-391-6933.

...Special Olympics soccer

Dear editor,

I want to thank Coach Larry, Coach John, Coach Snage, the LOHS Varsity Girls Soccer team and all other parents and coaches that helped with Wednesday night's soccer practice at LOHS. The LOHS Girls' Varsity team spent their practice time with our Lake Orion Special Olympic Soccer team. They did stretches, drills and small scrimmages.

Our special Olympians had such a great time. This partnership, that began last spring, is one of the highlights of our year. Thank you so much.

I would also like to thank Times Square Restaurant for their generosity in hosting a very successful fund raising dinner that same night.

Our Special Olympic athletes (and their families) had a great meal and lots of wonderful fellowship at the restaurant. The community support from Times Square is amazing.

It was a great night for Lake Orion Special Olympics.

...Food drive help

Dear editor,

Oxford/Orion FISH wishes to thank all the volunteers who took time out of their Mother's Day weekend to help sort contributions were brought during the USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

We received 8,900 lbs from Lake Orion Post Office and 7,282 lbs from the Oxford Post Office for a grand total of 16,182 lbs.—down about 2,000 lbs from last year.

Without all the volunteers that came out to sort and put it all away, and the drivers, Jimmy Boberg and Ritch Wendt, for picking it up continuously throughout the day, our pantry would not be filled wonderfully for our clients right now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you. We really appreciate your time and help.

-Sandy Klersy,

Oxford/Lake Orion FISH
