Hervey, will attend Central Michigan University in the fall to study secondary education as a Spanish instructor. Joe is the son of Catharine and Greg Hervey of Hadley. Established as an endowment in memory of Brandon Schools Principal, basketball coach and teacher Harvey Fletcher about nine years ago by former 1965 BHS graduate Joe Slaughter—the scholarship was established specifically for students seeking a career in education.

Joe Slaughter and his wife Sandra, a teacher for more than 37 years currently reside in Indianapolis. Slaughter is currently president, chief executive officer and chairman of Indianapolis based Herff Jones, Inc. Herff Jones is one of America's largest 100 percent employee-owned companies.

Joe Slaughter was at Brandon High School on June 2 to present the scholarship to Hervey.

"It's our way of giving back to the community," said Slaughter.

"This was the first time I actually presented the scholarship—we are honored to give this out."

Slaughter played basketball and was a student of Fletcher's in the early 1960s.
