Samantha Marquis of Ortonville was named to the dean's list at the University of Michigan-Flint for both the fall and winter semesters.

To be named to the dean's list at U-M Flint, a student must be full-time and earn a 3.5 grade point average. In her second semester as a freshman, Marquis had a 4.0 GPA. The 2009 Brandon High School graduate is in the pre-education program, pursuing a degree in early childhood education, with plans to teach kindergarten after graduation.

Marquis volunteers each week at Bridgewood Church as a preschool-first grade teacher and is the daughter of Jim and Sue Marquis of Ortonville.

Jason Sotzen of Ortonville has been named to the dean's list at Oakland University for the 2009-2010 school year.

To be named to the OU dean's list, a student must attain a 3.6 grade point average for two consecutive semesters. Sotzen achieved dean's list status while taking 16 credit hours in the fall semester and 23 in the winter semester.

The 2006 Brandon High School graduate has just finished his fourth year in the OU Honors College pre-med program and is pursuing a double major in Spanish and biochemistry. He was inducted on March 21 into the National Honor Society and will apply to medical school this fall with plans to become a surgeon.

Sotzen is the son of Brian and Joanne Sotzen of Ortonville.

Joanne Sotzen of Ortonville graduated magna cum laude from Saginaw Valley State University May 8 receiving a bachelor's degree in special education with a cognitive impairment endorsement.

She is pursuing a position in the Brandon School District as a special education teacher. Her proud family includes husband Brian, daughter Jennifer (Andrew) Wrobel, and son Jason.


Army Pvt. Michael W. Noll has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During nine weeks of training, Noll studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Noll, a 2009 Brandon High School graduate, is the brother of Eric Noll of Ortonville.



Army PFC Adam J. Montgomery, a 2009 Brandon High School graduate, and Brittany N. Gorris, a 2008 Brandon High School graduate, were married June 27. They reside at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas with their son, Brayden Robert Montgomery, who was born Nov. 1, 2009.

Adam graduated from basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. and AIT training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.

Adam is the son of Patrick and Cindy Montgomery of Groveland Township. Brittany is the daughter of Robin Gorris of Ortonville.



Kari Hoffman and Michael Smith of Cumming, Ga. are happy to announce their engagement.

The bride-to-be, a graduate of both Goodrich High School and Michigan State University, teaches fourth grade at Chattahoochie Elementary School in Georgia. She is the daughter of Dave and Lynn Hoffman of Goodrich.

The groom-to-be is a Norcross High School graduate and is employed as an equipment technician for the QT Corporation. He is the son of Mike and Mary Smith of Cumming, Ga.

A November wedding is planned.
