Solid start for cross country squads

Kovacic sets sophomore record

September 08, 2010 - The 2010 Varsity Cross Country Boy's and Girls campaign kicked off with solid efforts at the Adams Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 2.

Both teams finished fourth at the Invite; Brighton High School's boys and girls team took first.

Sophomore Brooke Kovacic shined in the event, finishing first overall in the girls meet, finishing with a sophomore record of 18:59.6. The previous record, 20:13, was set in 1984.

Finishing second for the Wildcats was freshman Alora McCoy with a 21:32, which also placed her 22nd overall. Sophomore Abby Wrobel ran a time of 21:49, placing her 26th overall.

Rounding out the top five for the girls was senior Megan Seeley with a 22:23 and senior Samantha Murphy, who ran a 23:40.

For the boys, senior Dylan Smith lead the way, placing fourth overall with a time of 17:03.

Sophomore Ryan Gillespie finished in 19th place with a time of 17:52 while sophomore Ross Chapman came in 28th with an 18:18 and junior Alec Smith was the last medalist for Oxford, finishing with a time of 18:22.

"I was very pleased with our effort," said Varsity Head Coach Ray Sutherland. "It was a very hot day and a tough course, and I thought we ran pretty good...all the medal winners did a pretty good job."

The next chance for the team to get out and run is at the Brother Rice Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11.
