More to hunting than killing

October 13, 2010 - Dear Editor,

(In response to, 'Hunting' not good news,' The Citizen, Oct. 9, page 6) Every year we read letters (in The Citizen) about how some people are digusted with the successful hunters' pictures. If you don't like them, don't look. You don't see people without kids complaining about the pages of academic achievements or school sports. Parents of these young hunters are just as proud as any other parent of a child who has reached a goal. As a hunter, I like reading about this. As far as 'hunting is searching'—it is searching for the most effective place to hunt. In regards to the baiting issue—the effort needed to effectively bait is a big part of the process of harvesting these animals. In addition, many hunters take safety classes and spend many hours practicing at the range to assure a quick, humane harvest. There's more to it than going and killing, they should be proud of it and not be made to feel bad because some people don't like it.
