January 12, 2011 - Goodrich- A new assisted living facility may soon be open in the village.

The village council voted 5-0 on Monday night to approve a planning commission recommendation for a zoning amendment from low density residential to commercial in the central business district of the village. The change to approximately five acres just north of Oxford Bank on State Road is necessary, say village officials, for the construction of an assisted living complex for senior citizens.

The project, which should begin later this year, will include two 12,000 square foot buildings with about 20 units in each structure.

"Based on our business model, we were a great fit for Goodrich," said Randy Legault, president and operations owner of The Pines Assisted Living Homes. "We seek the small community and create a very homelike atmosphere."

The company also has similar facilities in Burton, Lake Fenton, Lapeer and Swartz Creek.

"Moving a loved one into an assisted living facility is an emotional decision for the family," he said. "For that reason, I get to know all the families personally and if there are any questions they can come to me directly."

Legault said that most of their residents had lived within 15 minutes of the facilities.

Councilman Rick Horton was pleased with the new business.

"We could realize at least 30 new jobs for this community," he said.

Atlas Township Supervisor Shirley Kautman-Jones, who attended the meeting, was also very supportive of the The Pines coming to Goodrich.

"We hope the new business will bring a drug store back to Goodrich," she said. "I own business property in the village and a store would be a great addition."

The first "Pines" assisted living home was opened in 2001. While the Goodrich facility will be new, The Pines management team has an average of more than 23 years experience serving residents' needs.
