Swimmers torpedo Ferndale, 4-4 in OAA
February 16, 2011 - The varsity swim team got back to it's winning ways after defeating Ferndale 118-52 on Thursday, Feb. 10.
Oxford dominated most of the evening, winning 10 of the 11 events they competed in. The only event they did not win was the 100 backstroke, where they finished second and fifth.
"We didn't set any records, but I'm really proud of the boy's performance," varsity swim coach Jackie Rank said.
Individual performances were:
200 Medley Relay: Oxford's A relay of sophomore Jarrod Butler, sophomore Zachary Lavender, senior Jimmy Walker and junior captain Joey Tasch finished first with a time of 1:53.83.
200 Freestyle: Tasch finished first with a time of 2:12.97. Junior Daniel Stockard finished third and junior Sean Thomas was fourth for the Wildcats.
200 Individual Medley: The Wildcats swept the event with Butler coming in first with a time of 2:21.14. Freshman Blake Hibdon finished second and Lavender was third.
50 Freestyle: Senior Dylan Hency finished first with a time of 25.25. Sophomore Nico McNeil and junior Steven DeClercq finished fourth and fifth respectively.
100 Butterfly: Bell took first with a time of 1:09.85 for Oxford. Hency came in second and freshman Lewis Marshall was fourth.
100 Freestyle: It was the second sweep for Oxford during the meet. Hibdon finished first in a time of 56.24. Vandecar came in second and Thomas was third for the Wildcats.
500 Freestyle: Butler came in first for the Wildcats with a time of 5:21.54. Lavender and Stockard finished fourth and fifth respectively.
200 Freestyle Relay: The Wildcat A relay of Walker, Hibdon, Hency and Tasch finished first with a time of 1:40.81. The B relay of Vandecar, senior Jacob Clark, Thomas and McNeil came in second.
100 Backstroke: Vandecar finished second with a time of 1:13.03 and sophomore Corey Jones was fifth.
100 Breaststroke: Walker finished first for Oxford with a time of 1:13.23 and Merrill came in second.
400 Freestyle Relay: The A relay of Butler, Hibdon, Tasch and Walker finished first with a time of 3:42.14. The B relay of Hency, Bell, Stockard and Lavender came in second for the Wildcats.
With the victory, the Wildcats are now 4-5 overall, and 4-4 in the Oakland Activities Association Blue Division.
They will now prepare themselves for the Blue Division championships. Prelims for swimming will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 23; diving prelims will take place on Thursday, Feb. 24.
Finals for both events will take place on Friday, Feb. 25. All events will take place at Royal Oak High School and begin at 6 p.m.
"We're really looking forward to seeing Avondale, Athens and Royal Oak again because those were three very close meets and it should make for a very interesting League Meet," Rank said.
