March 16, 2011 - Michael Gapczynski, of Boy Scout Troop 189 in Clarkston, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in scouting.

Gapczynski's Eagle project involved removing the invasive species Oriental Bittersweet from a large area in Independence Oaks County Park with a group of 20 Scouts and volunteers.

As a member of Troop 189, he served as Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader and Historian. He earned 28 merit badges during his time in the troop and participated in many community service projects with other Scouts. Outings and High Adventure Trips during his Scouting career include a week long backpacking trip to Isle Royale National Park and two trips to Old Kia Kima Scout Camp in Arkansas, which was established in 1916.

He is a senior at Clarkston High School, member of the National Honor Society and a member of the FIRST Robotics team, Team RUSH 27. He plans to study Aerospace Engineering in college. He is the son of Allison and Brad Gapczynski and has a sister, Megan, a senior at Oakland University.
