Out of the classroom and into the pond

May 18, 2011 - You can read textbooks, listen to lectures and take tests, but when it comes to actual learning, nothing beats a hands-on experience. That's exactly what Oxford Middle School's sixth-graders got last week when they conducted scientific tests on their pond.

They rolled up their sleeves and tested water samples for phosphates, nitrates and dissolved oxygen. They also tested pH levels and turbidity, which refers to how clear the water is.

In addition to testing, students identified and examined a variety of tiny organisms who call the pond home.

The collected data is shared with the Clinton River Watershed Council. – Editor C.J. Carnacchio
