Track teams set 5 records during regional competition

May 25, 2011 - It was a record setting day for the Wildcats as the boys and girls varsity teams set a combined five school records during regionals at Brandon High School on Friday, May 20.

The Wildcats set school records in the girls pole vault, 3200 meter relay, the 800 meter run and the boys 1600 meter relay and the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Sarah Hillebrand broke her own school record in the pole vault. She finished in second place with a jump of 10 feet, five inches, three inches higher than her previous best of 10 feet, two inches.

The 3200 meter relay team of Brittany Johnson, Megan Seeley, Brooke Kovacic and Chelsea Johnson established the school record with their time of 9:28.40. They also broke their personal best time by nearly 20 seconds, according to Coach Bob Blunk.

Not settling for just one record during regionals, Brittany Johnson also set the school record in the 800 meter run at 2:18.50.

The 1600 meter relay, run by Terrence Webb, Aaron Stuk, Connor Risinger and Darren Lumpkin in 3:22.10, also set the Brandon High School track record. Stuk also broke his own record in the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing with a time of 38.20 and finished first in the 110 high hurdles in 14.40.

"We just had a good day all the way around for the boys and girls," Blunk said. "The girls had an exceptionally good day. We had a lot of PR (personal records) and schools records."

"I would have to say on the team 75 percent of the kids had personal records," Blunk said.

Despite those school records and personal bests, the Wildcats came up short at winnings regionals.

The boys finished in second with 108 points, six points behind regional champion Grand Blanc High School.

"I'm not disappointed at all that boys lost by six points because it was a great effort by them," Blunk said. "Grand Blanc had a good effort too.

Other standouts for the boys include 800 meter relay team of Terrence Webb, Mike Cynowa, Anthony McDugald and Lumpkin, who finished first with a time of 1:29.90.

Lumpkin finished first in the 200 meter dash in 21.90 and Cody Westmoreland vaulted his way to the top of the pole vault charts, finishing first with a 12 foot, 10 inch vault.

The girls finished in a tie for sixth place with Pontiac High School at 54 points.

Based on the results from regionals, the Wildcats will be sending six girls and eight boys to compete at states, which are held on Saturday, June 4 at Rockford High School.

Representing Oxford for the girls include Hillebrand (pole vault), Michelle Gilmore (300 low hurdles), Brittany Johnson (3200 relay, 800 meter run), Seeley (3200 relay), Kovacic (3200 relay, 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run) and Chelsea Johnson (3200 relay).

Representing the boys include Stuk (110 high hurdles, 400 relay, 300 intermediate hurdles, 1600 relay), Lumpkin (200 meter run, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay), McDugald (400 relay, 800 relay), Cynowa (400 relay, 800 relay), Risinger (1600 relay), Westmoreland (pole vault), Webb (800 relay, 1600 relay) and Colin Goetz (shot put).
