Softball team swept by Wolves
May 25, 2011 - It was another couple of tough luck losses for the Wildcats this past week when Clarkston swept a doubleheader from Oxford on Wednesday, May 18.
The Wildcats lost game one 4-3 in extra innings.
Oxford offense was held in check for most of the game, but they came up big in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game.
Sophomore captain Autumn Cervantez and junior captain reached on back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the sixth inning. Both would score when junior Amanda Boyer would double down the left field line, and Boyer would reach home plate on a Wolves defensive error.
After both teams failed to score in the seventh inning, Clarkston scored on a solo home-run, Boyer would get on base with a single in the bottom of the eighth, but was left stranded.
Varsity head coach Kristi McDevitt credits junior pitcher Hannah Rogers for keeping Oxford in the game. She pitched all eight innings, walking one and striking out five.
"Each week she is showing more poise and focus on the mound and if she continues to throw strikes, the defense will back her up," McDevitt said.
Oxford lost the second game 7-3.
The Wildcats hosted the Jill Milosch Memorial Tournament on Saturday, May 21 and finished the day with a 1-1 record against Northville and Imlay City.
Trailing 11-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning against Northville, the Wildcats staged a furious comeback, scoring eight runs in the innings to take a 12-11 win.
Cervantez led the inning off with a triple and was driven in on an Edgemon single. The Wildcats would bat through the lineup and score six runs before Edgemon hit a game winning triple, scoring Courtney May and Jennifer Fifield.
Edgemon finished the game going 5-5 with three singles, two triples and six RBI's.
Freshman Kyla Kurczewski picked up the win for Oxford.
Oxford would lose 5-4 to Imlay City in game two.
The Wildcats are 6-19 overall and play at Farmington High School on Wednesday, May 25.
