October 05, 2011 - Beginning on Oct. 16, nineteen former MSP posts statewide, including Groveland Township, will convert to detachments, facilities where troopers can start and end their shifts, store property/evidence and meet with the public by appointment. Detachments will not maintain public lobby hours. The closest MSP posts to the township will be Metro North, 14350 10 Mile Road, Oak Park; Lapeer, 975 South Main St.; and Flint Post, 4481 Corunna Road.

Michigan State Police Lt. Mike McMormick said changes are coming for residents in Groveland Township.

"There will be troopers started and ending shifts at the Groveland Post just like now; however, there will be no supervisor working out of the Dixie Highway building," he said. "The supervisor will be from the Flint Michigan State Police Post."

"In some ways the new arraignment will provide more trooper visibility with the supervisor out in the area. Rather than in the building, they will be out on the road."

McMormick said residents of Groveland, Holly and Rose townships can go to the Flint Michigan State Police Post to speak about any issues they may have.

"This move by the Michigan State Police kept more troopers on the road and prevented layoffs," McCormick said. "The transition will be seamless."

Under the new guidelines the Flint Post will have 48 troopers, covering Genesee and Shiawassee counties, in addition to the section of I-75 from northern Genesee County to Baldwin Road.

Statewide, the MSP is reducing the number of posts from 62 to 29. The regional policing plan, which helps the department achieve its $17.7 million general fund reduction for fiscal year 2012, allows the department to continue its mission and achieve necessary cost savings without laying off troopers.
