Dragons win with buzzer-beating goal

December 30, 2009

With 3.3 seconds left in Icers' Dec. 19 game against non-conference foe, Waterford Mott, Junior Captain Danny Blascak found the back of the Mott net with a wrist shot from the point. Blascak's goal gave the Dragons a 6-5 victory and sent the team happily into the holiday break.

Blascak got his shot after Head Coach Pat Cherry called a strategic time out with 7.5 seconds left in the game. During the break, he and Assistant Coach Nolan Howe mapped out the final play and the Dragons executed flawlessly, according to the coaching staff.

The game was a see-saw affair when the teams traded goals in the first period, ending it 1-1. The Dragon goal was scored by Brett Reed, with an assist from Jake Kreutzer.

The second period saw the Dragons jump out early with a two goal lead 3-1, with goals from Zachary Koonce and Corbin Rainey. But Mott would not go away, and scored two goals late in the period, bringing the second period to a close 3-3.

The third period saw each team score twice before the Blascak game winner. Other third period goals were scored by Nick Balavich with help from Calvin Vaughn and Kreutzer, and Corbin Rainey unassisted.

Netminder Dominic Juncaj stopped 27 of 32 shots for the victory. The hockey team is off for the holiday break and resumes action, Thursday Jan. 7, 5:30 p.m. at the the Detroit Skating Club.
