Barbara Rollin, Independence Township's new senior center coordinator, got acquainted with local residents at an Open House, Sept. 22.

"The folks I have meet so far have been very friendly and open with me," Rollin said. "All of them would like to see the center move forward and several of them are planning on coming more often."

She worked as senior center director in Highland Township for 10 years, and was hired by the Independence Township Board, Aug. 25.

"I am impressed with our staff who work really well with the seniors," she said. "Mary Melega is our programmer and she has developed a great program with classes and senior sports on and off site."

Goals include morning socializing and other programs for seniors, she said.

"We do have a great turn out for our gourmet lunches on Thursdays," she said. "Right now I am looking at the programs we offer and see where changes or enhancements need to be made. Our Senior Advisory and Friends group have been very supportive and I am looking forward to working them more."
