Library millage

The Genesee District Library will be asking county voters on May 3 for a .25 mill tax increase. Property owners with a home that has an SEV of $100,000 will pay an additional $25 per year. The current operating millage is .7481, which will expire in six years.

Genesee County Library officials say the increase, the first since 1998, is necessary due to cuts in funding, including a 57 percent cut in state aid as well as a 15 percent drop in property tax revenue. Property taxes account for 80 percent of the budget.

There are 19 library locations in Genesee County, including the Goodrich Library, 10327 Hegel Road.
