Cupples guilty of sexual assault

May 11, 2011

On Monday, a jury found Oxford resident Thomas Patrick Cupples guilty of two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC), a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Cupples was accused of molesting a girl he knew through his family on multiple occasions beginning when she was 11 years old and continuing until she was 13.

The girl is now 14.

He was also charged with two counts of first-degree CSC, but the jury chose to convict him of the two lesser counts.

Cupples is a former Ferndale Police sergeant who retired in 2005 after 28 years. He worked for Orion Township as a code enforcement officer until being terminated from that position in September 2010.

He was arrested in August 2010.

Cupples will be sentenced on May 26.
