The Waterford Warthogs fought through the heat for a win in their season opener in their new Clarkston High School home.

The Warthogs beat the Tri-City Thunder, 17-7.

Quarterback Mike McKnight threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Matt Townsend who scored. Chris Giles scored the second touchdown. He recovered a fumble and had a touchdown return for 70 yards.

Kicker Kyle Galbraith put extra points on the board with two PATs and a 45-yard field goal.

"We looked great in the first half," said Mike Zak, head coach. "But with the heat and humidity both teams started to be a little stale in the second half. We need a lot more work on conditioning."

The Warthogs will work on it as they prepare for Saturday's game against the Michigan Wolverines in Mount Clemens.

"They are the toughest divisional opponent," said Zak. "They are one of the favorite teams to win the conference. The guys mindset is realizing they have a lot more work to do and they are facing a tough opponent. My mindset is limit the mistakes and make sure we execute well for a full 60 minutes."
