In order to become the best, you have to swim against the best.

The varsity girls swim team swam against some of the best Oakland County has to offer on Saturday, Oct. 1 during the Oakland County Swim and Dive meet at Lake Orion High School.

Oxford posted their highest ever finish for the meet, finishing in 18th place with 30 points.

"I'm very pleased with the top 20 finish," varsity swim head coach Jackie Rank said.

In addition, two school records were established during the meet. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of freshman Taylor Curtis, senior captain Amanda delaPaz, senior captain Claire Patrell and sophomore Haley Kornburger finished their race in a school record time of 1:47.29.

They finished in 20th.

Kornburger also established a school record in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 53.42. She finished fourth in the meet.

32 teams competed in the event, which was won for the seventh straight year by Farmington Hills Mercy, who recorded 362 points.

Birmingham Marion finished in second with 227 points, while Clarkston was third with 206 points.

Other results include Kornburger placing fourth in the 50 Freestyle with a 24.53, the 200 Medley Relay team of junior Caitlyn Wroblewski, sophomores Elizabeth Wilkins, Rose FitzCrane and delaPaz finished 31st with a time of 2:12.19 and the 400 Freestyle Relay team finishing 19th in a time of 3:55.91.

Rank noted the times for the girls were just off some of their personal best times.

"I believe this is due to the amount of work over the past week and partly due to the competition," Rank said. "It can be scary for the girls to go up against 32 other schools and some of the best swimmers in the state of Michigan."

However, Rank noted the swim gave her an idea where they stood as a program within Oakland County.

"I'm looking forward to continue to grow the program so we can place even higher in the upcoming years," Rank said.

Up next for the girls is their final home swim meet of the season against Farmington at 6:30 p.m.
