Daniel Axford Elementary second-graders received an up close and personal view of the inner workings of their local government during a Dec. 1 field trip that took them around the Village of Oxford.

Students visited the public library, Oxford Elementary, the village municipal complex and the main fire station in an effort to learn more about their community and the types of services provided by local government.

The trip was part of an International Baccalaureate unit entitled "Where We Are in Place and Time."

Students are studying the similarities and differences between communities around the world including their own.

The unit focuses on answering some of the following questions:

n What is a community?

n Where is my community and what is it like there?

n How do citizens live together in a community?

n How do communities change?

n How can a citizen impact a community?

n How do I fit into my community?

During the field trip, the students met and talked with local officials such as Parks Director Ron Davis, Oxford Village Manager Joe Young and DDA Director Madonna Van Fossen.

Rather than just reading about how governments work, the students were able to see which entities and departments provide the daily services for which their parents pay property taxes to receive.
