Girls Lax drops two

The Oxford varsity girls dropped a close one to North Harrison 7-6 on Monday night.

Emma Kimmel, Jordan Pieczynski, Abby Wrobel, and Kayce Calcaterra divided up the scoring.

On May 1, the Oxford High School Varsity girls lost an away game against Farmington 13-5. Despite the loss, Kimmel continued her scoring dominance with three goals. Pieczynski and Calcaterra both had a goal a piece.

Coach Andrew Bausack praised junior captains Kimmel and Pieczynski for their leadership on and off the field. Kimmel remains the strongest player on the squad, leading all Wildcats in scoring.

"She's got great stick skills," Bausack observed, and she is "working on her ability to draw the defence's attention."

Bausack wants her to play more of a point guard than a shooting guard role, however.

Jordan Pieczynski is another leader who has shown a lot of improvement this season, the coach said.

Her emphasis this season has been on developing an ability to play with both hands.

Kayli Kammerer has been a defensive standout, Bausack added. She creates a lot of turnovers and a lot of havoc for the opponent.

On the other hand, Bausack pointed to turnovers as a main weakness.

"They are killing us," he admitted. Longer time on defense fatigues the team, and "pretty soon we're a step slower (and) at some point the levee breaks," he summarized.

This is Oxford's first year with a girls varsity lacrosse program, however, so Bausack figures that some inconsistencies related to their youth are to be expected.

Overall, he was positive about his lacrosse squad, despite the recent losing slide. "I see definite progress being made," Bausack said.
