Veterans keep memories alive

May 30, 2012

World War II veteran Charles J. Smalley receives a veteran’s medal at the ceremony. Smalley fought on D-Day through France, and was wounded in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany. He earned the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, and other medals. He was also Clarkston police marshal until 1993.
American Legion Post 63 led the community in Memorial Day remembrances, May 28 in Lakeview Cemetery.

The day's events kicked off with a parade through downtown Clarkston, featuring the Legion honor guard, Clarkston High School marching band, and local military vehicles.
