Photo by Mary Keck With red, white, and blue costumes, sparkling banners, patriotic band music, and lots of candy, Clarkston kicked off Independence Day with the "American Made" parade. After a stirring performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" by Mt. Zion student Tiffany Calhoun, veterans from the American Legion held flags high to commemorate the day our country declared its independence. Children dressed in stars and stripes lined up along Main and Church Streets to catch candy tossed from atop fire trucks and floats. They also saw a few of their favorite comic book characters like The Incredible Hulk and Captain America who flexed their "muscles" for the crowd. The Clarkston High School and Mt. Zion Samba bands boomed downtown with horns trumpeting and drums beating as beauty queens Miss Michigan and Miss Great Lakes waved to onlookers. The Oakland County 4-H Poultry Club displayed blue and red chickens while tail wagging Canine All-Stars in patriotic sashes trotted down the road. Bubbles billowed from bright red trucks and an enormous bald eagle and green lady liberty floated passed Clarkston's historic buildings. |
