Walk for hearts on Sunday

October 03, 2012

Congenital Heart Walk returns to Clarkston's Depot Park, 10 a.m., Oct. 7, with a walk through town, music, entertainment, speakers, light breakfast and lunch.

Michigan's Lt. Gov. Brian Calley will speak about his family's personal experience with congenital heart disease.

Also speaking will be Dr. Richard Ohye of Mott Children's Hospital, and Dr. Henry Walters and Dr. Ralph Delius of Children's Hospital of Michigan. Last year's inaugural walk brought in over $25,000.

"We're fortunate that southeast Michigan has some of the best pediatric cardiology hospitals in the country, as well as a very strong community of heart families who offer each other support," said Sally Powers, local committee chair and mom to a 4-year-old CHD survivor who underwent his second open heart surgery this past April. "Given its prevalence, congenital heart disease is grossly underfunded. But our Michigan walkers will show the nation how a group of inspired individuals can make a difference."

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Check
