Ortonville DDA to host information session

by Susan Bromley

January 30, 2013

Ortonville- Area residents can learn about various opportunities to become involved in the community at one of two hour-long sessions planned for Feb. 6.

The Downtown Development Authority will host a day session from 9 a.m.-10 a.m., as well as an evening session from 6 p.m.-7 p.m., Feb. 6 at the Old Town Hall, 486 Mill St.

"There will be a slide show on everything we are doing from now until December," said DDA Executive Director Molly LaLone. "It's a complete calendar of events and projects—pretty dramatic. I love looking at the things we get done. It takes a lot of people to make all that happen and it's a matter of recognizing the people who help us and inviting people to join us."

The DDA works to support and promote local businesses while maintaining the historic heritage of the community. Events that the DDA will be involved in this year include a euchre tournament in March, as well as "Paint the Town Purple with Love Week: Celebrating Random Acts of Kindness" in collaboration with Relay for Life; Beets, Beats, and Eats, the annual summer event that takes place for 12 weeks on Fridays from June 14-Aug. 30 featuring dinner, local vendors, and musicians; CreekFest in June; Septemberfest and Christmas in the Village.

The DDA needs the help of volunteers to make these community events a success.

In particular this year, LaLone is hoping someone will step forward to fill the role of CreekFest coordinator, who will acts as a liaison for all the different groups involved in Creekfest, such as the Old Mill, all merchants, and various community groups. This year is the 10th anniversary of CreekFest, which celebrates local waterways with fun activities. This year's CreekFest will be a multi-day event that includes fireworks and a carnival sponsored by the Ortonville Lions Club.
