Wildcat bowlers off to a winning start

December 18, 2013

"Whenever cross-town rivals meet you never know what to expect," said Bowling Head Coach J.R. Lafnear. "It matters not what sport or what level." Such was the case in the Varsity bowling match with Lake Orion and Oxford held Monday night at Collier Lanes.

The boys varsity took the Baker game 1 228 to 146, while game 2 saw Lake Orion get hot and win 248 to 202. Oxford held a 6 to 4 points lead. In the first match play game the very young LO team shocked the veteran Oxford team 1024 to 956.

Co-Captains Brandon Hurlburt bowled a 258 and Sean McKinney bowled a 246 to score Oxfords only points. Now Oxford found they trailed 11 to 8. Then the Wildcats showed up in a big way. Drew Pappas 234, Jake Delong 235, Mitch Kessler 234, McKinney 213 and Hurlburt 236 for a new school record 1152 game and a come from behind win, final score Oxford 19 to Lake Orion 11.

"I'm very proud of these guys. They were a bit off in game one and make some nice adjustments in game 2," said J.R. Lafnear. "This was a big win for us if we are going to reach our goals for the season."

For the girls varsity the Baker game 1 went to Lake Orion by 8 pins and Game 2 by merely 1 pin. Game 1 of head up play had Oxford's Alyssa Hurlburt toss a nice 187, Megan Kessler 212, Hannah Farmer 180 and Abby Pappas 170. Oxford would lose game 1 by a slim 5 pins, 870 to 865. Game 2 had some real fireworks. Hurlburt tossed 9 strikes in a row to bowl a season high 257. Hannah Farmer also had bowled 9 strikes in her game and finished with a 233. Oxford would win the game and total pins for head up play but lose the match 19 to 11.

"This match came right down to a couple shots. Both teams are young and have talent," Lafnear said. "I was impressed by the girl's attitudes today. They fought all the way to the end.""

The Wildcat Varsity and JV teams went to 300 Bowl in Waterford to bowl against newcomer Bloomfield on Dec. 12.

"After an unusually slow start," according to Lafnear, the varsity boys brought home a victory with a final score of 24 to 6.

Bowling well for the Wildcats were Captians Brandon Hurlburt 209 and Sean McKinney 204 and 236. Drew Pappas tossed in a 217 and Brady Wykoop score a 226.

The varsity girls also won with a final score of 30-0. "The Black Hawk girls are just getting started and were no match for Oxford," Lafnear said.

Bowling well for the Lady Wildcats were Alyssa Hurlburt 161,174, Savannah Dehmel 170 and Captain Stefanie-Anne Chizmadia 186.

The boys and girls will take the lanes next on Sunday Jan 5 against Romeo at Imperial Bowling Lanes. The match starts at 8 a.m.
