Ruth E. Freeman

Freeman, Ruth Elizabeth, age 90 passed away peacefully on June 19, 2014 after a prolonged illness. Ruth was born in Gladstone, Michigan on July 23, 1923 to Swedish immigrant parents Louis and Agda Danielson. After the death of her father, she was raised by her mother along with older sister Viola and brother Louie along the shore of Lake Michigan. Her dear cousin Naomi was more like an older sister to Ruth and constant companion to Ruth and Viola.
A graduate of Gladstone High School class of 1942, Ruth moved to the lower peninsula to attend Cleary Secretarial College. She met her future husband James Freeman. After WWII they married and raised four children.
Ruth worked as an Executive Secretary at Shwayder Brothers and Wyandotte Chemical which became BASF. While working, she volunteered at Wyandotte Hospital & St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield.
In retirement, she was committed to giving back working at St. Joseph hospital ER, the Scripps Center, and the Lake Orion Township Library. Post retirement she enjoyed part time jobs at Swede Annes and Always Christmas in Lake Orion.
Ruth enjoyed walking her dog Holly 2-3 times a day in any kind of weather & visit with neighbors. She would cross-country ski every winter until the age of 85 and was an avid reader.
Ruth is survived by her four children: son James Freeman & wife Cynthia, son Michael Freeman & wife Kathy, daughter Lori Potter & husband Don and son Lance Freeman & wife Kelly. Her greatest joy was loving nine grandchildren (Erin, Kate, Joe, Kristen, Laura, Jason, Shawn, McKenzie and Benjamin) and being ”GiGi” to four great-grandchildren (Evan, Aiden, Donavon and Kory).
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, June 27, 2014, 11 a.m. with an instate time of 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 715 N. Lapeer Rd., Lake Orion. Memorial visitation Thursday, 3-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Modetz Funeral Home, 100 E. Silverbell Rd., Orion. Inurnment Eastlawn Cemetery.
