A handy way to communicate

March 23, 2011

Second-graders in teacher Lee Phillips’ class at Daniel Axford Elementary recently got a lesson in sign language when Shannon Williams, a hearing impaired teacher consultant for Oakland Schools, visited the classroom as part of March is Reading Month. As Phillips read a story to her class, Williams signed all the words. Afterwards, Williams discussed sign language with students, many of whom shared signs they knew. Photo by C.J. Carnacchio.
