Churches hosting patriotic event in downtown park

June 29, 2011

First Baptist Church of Oxford and the Baptist Church of Hadley are inviting the community to celebrate this nation’s 235th birthday with patriotic music and skits in downtown’s Centennial Park at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 3.

“We’re combining forces,” said Oxford resident and First Baptist member Amy Knauf, who’s helping organize the event.

The free event will feature performances by a brass ensemble and a choir, each consisting of members from both churches, according Knauf, 21, who will be singing as part of the choir.

There will also be solo performances, both vocal and instrumental.

In addition to music, Knauf said there will be “readings from the Declaration of Independence” and “some dramatic monologues.”

The churches are doing all this as part of their community outreach efforts and to honor veterans and this country.

“It’s a blessing to be able to serve and honor both the community and God,” Knauf said.
