The varsity girls swim and dive team got the season underway on the right note after they defeated Lapeer Aug. 23.

In a competitive meet throughout, Oxford managed to pull in the diving portion of the meet due to Lapeer not attempting a single dive.

School records have already started to fall as sophomore Haley Kornburger established a school record for 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly during the meet. In doing so, she automatically qualified for the state finals.

“We will swim her later on in the season throughout the meets, maybe in the 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke and see if she can get those state cuts to and then she will be able to make the choice in which events, with our recommendation, where she would place the highest for state meet,” Rank said.

Overall, varsity swim coach Jackie Rank was pleased with how well the girls performed during the first meet. “The fact that it was their first meet and they weren’t really sure what to expect, they did very well,” Rank said.

On Thursday, August 25, the Wildcats hosted Rochester Adams and lost 129-57.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats established two school records and finished inside the top two five times.

Freshman Taylor Curtis finished first in the 200 Freestyle and broke the school record with her time of 2:06.50, while Kornburger broke her own school record for the 50 Freestyle with her time of 24.23. Kornburger also came in first in the 100 Butterfly, while Curtis finished first 100 Freestyle.

Other standouts for Oxford include freshman Elizabeth Marsh, who finished second in diving and finished with 133 points and Marissa Johnson came in third in the 500 Freestyle with 6:25.65.

With the loss, Oxford drops to 1-1 overall, and 0-0 in the Oakland Activities Association white division.

They swim at Berkley for their first OAA white division meet on Thursday, Sept. 1.
